Getting Started: Console 8

Last Updated: Feb 05, 2018 01:23PM GMT
Console 8 must be installed and configured on each computer that will be used to deliver certification exams. There are several ways to approach the installation/configuration of Console 8.

Before you start, consider:
  1. That Console 8 is purpose built and developed to run in a particular environment. Be aware of and meet the Technical Requirements for the Program (i.e. MOS 2016 - under "Certification programs") and Console 8 (under "Exam delivery systems")
  • Specifically the need for Administrative Rights. You can use a Windows Local Admin (capable of accessing the internet) or a Domain Admin. It is often best to set up a Windows Profile specifically for exam delivery.
  • Also note program specific requirements. i.e. needing the "US Metric" Revit Content for the Revit Exams.
  1. Who will be logging into Windows to run the Exams? As the System requires Admin Rights to run, you could login to Windows with an Admin Profile, or you can configure Console 8 to run as this Admin by using the "Admin Credentials" Tool. This will allow a Standard User to login to Windows and then launch Console 8 without you having to share the Admin Windows credentials.
  • Note: If you use the Admin Credentials Tool to run as an Admin, the Applications (Office, Autodesk, etc…) need to be licensed, activated and set up on that Admin Profile. Basically, you should be able to open the Application and start a new file in that Application without being confronted by any pop-ups - licensing, activation, EULA, etc… as these can disrupt the Exam Launch process.
  1. You need an Org Admin account associated to a Test Centre Account in order to download, install and configure Console 8. You can register with Certiport here and then have an existing Org Admin associate you to the Test Centre Account using these steps. If you think that you already have an Account (User or Test Centre) but are not sure of the details, please get in touch.

Typical Console 8 Installation

On a Vanilla Windows PC (that meets the Tech Requirements), the typical standalone installation steps are:

Installing Console 8 on Networked Machines

On a Network / in a Lab, one option is to install Console 8 on each machine as if it is a typical standalone one. Alternatively, you can configure your testing machines to get Exam Content from one machine - See Console 8 - LAN Solution for configuration steps. Once you are familiar with the process and have Downloaded the Console 8 Setup File, on your "Console Server":
  • Install Console 8 & configure the Test Centre Account along with any Additional Settings (i.e. Proxy, Admin Credentials, etc…). This will not be an Exam Delivery machine so you only need Rights to install Console 8 & the Exam Content.
    • You can automate this configuration by using silent installation switches. If you need assistance, please contact us.
  • Install the Exam Content (sometimes referred to as Updates) for the exams that you want on your "Console Clients" (Testing Machines)
  • Configure this machine as a "Console Server" then let Console 8 restart.

On your "Console Clients"
  • Deploy Console 8 to your "Console Clients" using switches to configure the Test Centre Account & LAN settings. As soon as the Update Service is "active", it will request the Exam Content from your "Console Server".
    • If you need to configure Additional Settings like Proxy & Admin Credentials as well, include the switches for these in your deployment script.
  • Allow a few minutes for the Exam Content to install. 10 to 20 minutes should suffice depending on the number of Exams that you are installing and speed of your LAN.
  • Run a Configuration Exam (MOS Only. Excludes OneNote & SharePoint Exams)
